HOW YOU CAN HELP

Family Support and Community Resource Project

At Girls Inc. we celebrate the similarities and differences among girls and embrace girls of every background and ability. We believe that girls are sisters, and because of this belief Girls Inc. of Greater Houston has partnered with the Texas Department of State Health Services through its Family Support and Community Resource Project

The Project Mission

  • To expand Girls Inc. programming to be more inclusive of girls with special health care needs by adapting Girls Inc. curricula, as needed, and targeting the underserved population of girls with special health care needs.
  • To conduct wellness programming to include girls with and without special health care needs.
  • To educate girls and increase awareness of special health care needs, thereby normalizing for all girls the perceived differences associated with special needs.

Family / Community Support
Families, particularly those who face the extra challenges of children with special health care needs, often are not in a position to expose girls to all the skills and experiences needed to grow into healthy, independent adults. Education programs and programs involving both the parent/guardian and the child offer family members the opportunity to develop skills in communicating with girls and assisting them in becoming productive, satisfied adults.

Who are the children with Special Health Care Needs
Children who have or are at risk for chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional conditions and who also require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally. You can find out more about services for children with special healthcare needs at the Texas Department of State Health Services website: http://www.dshs.state.tx.us

If you are interested in offering or attending one of our programs, please contact the Girls Inc. Program Director at 713-802-2260, ext. 12.
