Girls Incorporated of Greater
Houston was formed in 1996 in response to the growing demand for quality
programs for girls and young women in the Greater Houston area. Since
its inception, Girls Inc. has provided programs to over 8,000 girls
from a broad spectrum of backgrounds. At Girls Inc., we reach out
to girls whoever and wherever they are—in rural areas and urban
centers, in the classroom, on the playground, and on the playing
field. We realize that all girls can benefit from Girls Inc. programs
and our goal is to serve girls in every Houston neighborhood.
Girls Inc. of Greater Houston is
one of over 125 affiliates and licensees of the national nonprofit youth
organization Girls
Incorporated ® ,
formerly known as Girls Clubs of America. Girls Inc. is the leading
national expert on girls’ issues and houses the largest, most comprehensive
research center on girls in the country at its National Resource Center
(NRC) in Indianapolis. Because all our programs are researched, developed
and piloted by the NRC, Girls Inc. provides the highest quality, cutting
edge, and age appropriate programming available to girls ages 6-18 in
the Greater Houston area. Girls Inc. programs are designed to encourage
girls to take risks and master physical, intellectual, and emotional
challenges.
Girls Inc. consistently provides
quality programming to diverse groups of girls and young women in five
of the local school districts. We serve numerous additional girls through
our collaborative efforts with over 15 local organizations, including
Communities In Schools, Girl Scouts of America, Boys and Girls Clubs
of Houston, I Have A Dream and the Women’s
Fund.
The compelling voices and perspectives
of girls are woven throughout the organization’s work, which includes engaging programs, original
research that highlights underlying causes and effective solutions for
girls’ issues and persuasive advocacy at both the local and national
levels. |
